1986 Suzuki GSX-R 1100-G Race Bike:

UPDATE: Well, the motor wasn't finished for the AFM endurance race in Oct., but the bike is finally moving along! I just about have her ready to fire up after more than ten years of storage. I have also decided to run stock upper/lower plastic in lieu of the Yosh Tornado stuff. That plastic is too rare.

My race team partner Rick found this one on the internet. I had been planning to build a Yoshimura Race-Replica with my parts 750, but, hell, all the work here is already done! Bike has been sitting since 1993.

With plastic installed.
This bike came from Craig Hightower, an ex-AFM racer in the Bay Area. It has tons of cool parts. Many of these parts are now on my 750. I had wanted to leave it as-is, but to race this thing competitively, I needed to convert the wheels to 17-inch.

Bike w/extra parts.
Hopefully I will get this bike completely finished for a track day in February '04, then the first AFM race in March '04 at Buttonwillow.

Brembo full-floating rotors and Marvic magnesium front wheel! OOOH! These are now on my 750. The '88 1100 rear wheel from this bike is also on my 750. They work AWESOME for parts built so long ago.

This bike will be raced with the stock ignition box, the ACCEL Coils and wires shown here, and Mikuni RS-36 Carburetors.

  • Bike assembled and ready to take to Infineon.

    Dec. 16, 2003:

  • Track day and motor break-in a success! Now it will need some minor tweaking and paint job. Stay tuned for details.

    Motor Specs:

  • 1mm over with Suzuki pistons
  • Compression bumped up to 11.5:1
  • Barnett Clutch and Plates
  • Race valve job w/Kibbelwhite valves
  • Falicon balanced crank and clutch basket
  • APE Cam-chain tensioner
  • Power-Line and NRC case covers
  • Safety wired (UUGH)

    Motor Thoughts:

I built this motor with reliability in mind. I didn't want to build a full-out stroker because of the tuning headaches and short life. Also, AFM rules dictate 1mm overbore maximum. This bike will be raced against a serious variety of machines, so I want it available for at least a couple of seasons. This is more of a fun racer anyway.

  • Motor break-in at Infineon Dec. 2003.
