1983 VF750F Interceptor

Interceptor 750
A hot bike with some killer parts.

1983 Interceptor VF750F:

This was my killer canyon carver and dragstrip mama for a couple of years. I loved this bike, which I purchased in 1988 for $850. It had a bad gear fork from neutral to second (real common on high-mileage VF750Fs), and bent forks (real common an any VF that has been down).

I rode her for a few months, crashed her, and then spun a main gear while doing burnouts. It was at that time I made the following changes:

  • Fox Shock
  • D&D tuned pipes (copied from the HRC ones)
  • Powdercoated the frame and wheels white
  • Front-end rebuilt and race-tuned by Bobby at Steele's Cycle Salvage
  • 750 race seat cowl
  • Jet Kit
  • Severe lightening of the frame and bolt-on components (thanks Jerry!)
  • Larger Magna radiator with Interceptor necks welded in
  • Russell braided lines
  • Lockhart windscreen
  • Ferodo pads
  • Used, low-mileage motor

  • Me with the VF-750 in stock trim.

First day back from the revamp! I could
get into my old TT Leathers then! I was
    also wearing my Freddie Spencer
    "Signature" Spidi gloves.
Oh yeah, I was cool . . . WAY cool!

Once the revamp was completed, the bike handled wonderfully. It was one of the best handling bikes I have ever ridden. The front springs were chopped, spacers put in, and Showa 5wt fork oil added. The feedback was incredible.

As for the motor, she ran OK. My original motor was basically hosed, so I opted for a low-mileage motor out of a junker. I was lucky and found one with 3,000 miles on her. Pretty sweet if you ask me. She had plenty of power, but I never quite got the carbs dialed in correctly for that altitude.

the spun main gear problem. -March 1990
The bike was a real standout to be sure. I remember pulling up to one of the local Honda dealerships, and all of the employees came out of the shop to see exactly what I was riding. The powdercoated frame and wheels set it off real nice, and those D&D pipes, well, they were insanely loud. I can't explain how good and loud this bike was. If you have heard one of these with D&D race pipes, or HRC pipes, you know what I am talking about.

At Bandimere Speedway, Sept. 9, 1990. My bike
wasn't tuned anywhere close to where she needed
to be. I had just got it finished before the
annual bike drags that year. My carbs were not
dialed in, and my gearing choices horrible. It
was a bad day at the track. -September 1990
I participated in the Annual Bike Drags at Bandimere Speedway that year, but my bike was not set up right at all. My times were real slow, and it was frustrating to say the least. I eventually got it running right for the strip, but by then I was headed for the Army. My Metzeler 180 slick looked sweet on the back though!

On leave from basic training. Too much snow to
ride, so I decided to burn $100. -December 1990
I rode the bike until October, when my Army stint started. The Interceptor was sold in August of 1991 to make room for my GSXR.
